L2 within-language morphological competition during spoken word recognition

چکیده

Bilinguals recognize words with shared morphology and phonology cross-linguistically (i.e., cognates) faster than that do not have these characteristics. Moreover, higher phonological overlap in cognates enhances the effects, which suggests eases word recognition. However, it is currently unclear whether compete purely morphologically before spoken recognition within language proficiency L2 modulates degree of morphological competition. Spanish monolinguals English learners varying completed an auditory lexical decision task Spanish. Stimuli were sequences prior to a point (e.g., /mark/ /marko/) whose activated cohorts minimal pairs. Some pairs related huerto ‘vegetable patch’ versus huerta garden’), whereas some others had no relationship marco ‘frame’ marca ‘brand’). Results showed both groups processed solely competitors similar way as they did competitors. Taken together, findings suggest relatedness does modulate either L1 or when speakers listen absence context. In addition, architecture qualitatively native speakers.

Toddlers' sensitivity to within-word coarticulation during spoken word recognition: Developmental differences in lexical competition.

To understand speech, listeners need to be able to decode the speech stream into meaningful units. However, coarticulation causes phonemes to differ based on their context. Because coarticulation is an ever-present component of the speech stream, it follows that listeners may exploit this source of information for cues to the identity of the words being spoken. This research investigates the de...

The Dynamics of Lexical Competition During Spoken Word Recognition

The sounds that make up spoken words are heard in a series and must be mapped rapidly onto words in memory because their elements, unlike those of visual words, cannot simultaneously exist or persist in time. Although theories agree that the dynamics of spoken word recognition are important, they differ in how they treat the nature of the competitor set-precisely which words are activated as an...

Phonological Competition during Spoken-Word Recognition in Infants and Adults

An ongoing debate concerns whether spoken word recognition happens in an incremental or continuous manner (Marslen-Wilson & Zwitserlood, 1989; McClelland & Elman, 1986). In the current study, participants (31 adults and 49 infants aged 24-30months) were presented with four images while they heard a sentence like “Look at the cat”. Among the images was one object that rhymed with the spoken word...

Competition and segmentation in spoken word recognition

Spoken utterances contain few reliable cues to word boundaries, but listeners nonetheless experience little difficulty identifying words in continuous speech. The authors present data and simulations that suggest that this ability is best accounted for by a model of spoken-word recognition combining competition between alternative lexical candidates, and sensitivity to prosodic structure. In a ...

Spoken Word Recognition Strategy for Tamil Language

This paper outlines a strategy for recognizing a preferred vocabulary of words spoken in Tamil language. The basic philosophy is to extract the features using mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) from the spoken words that are used as representative features of the speech to create models that aid in recognition. The models chosen for the task are hidden Markov models (HMM) and autoassoci...
